Why give the dog fluid replacement?

Just as when we humans train hard or get sick and can suffer from fluid loss - so can your dog. If you have a dog that you train a lot with, even during warmer days, for example in hunting, pulling, tracking or other tougher training, your dog's fluid balance needs to be restored.


What does fluid replacement contain?

Fluid replacement for dogs is often powder that you mix with water. The replacement often contains substances such as: glucose, maltodextrin, potassium chloride, calcium citrate, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate. These are all substances that help to compensate for the loss of fluid and electrolyte that can result from severe exercise or illness such as diarrhea or vomiting.



When should I give the dog fluid replacement?

It is important to give the dog fluid replacement in advance. By that is meant that it is good to make sure that the dog gets the compensation right after hard effort. One tip is to mix the remuneration before you go away for example hunting, training, competition or the like to be able to give this to the dog in connection or after the activity. If your dog has been ill or has had diarrhea then fluid replacement is good to give the dog to restore the body. If the dog has had diarrhea, it has lost large amounts of fluid that needs to be replenished - otherwise the dog risks being dried out. You can also advantageously give the dog fluid replacement during the hot days of the summer.


Fluid replacement is something that veterinarians recommend that you should always have at home. This is because you do not know what day or time the dog can get bad in the stomach or if the dog went for a long walk in the summer heat and need to replenish with liquid. You do not have to worry about overdosing on fluid replacement, but it is something the dog needs in its water bowl daily.
