Sweat Scrapers and Sponges

Sponges and sweat scrapers are good to have when the horse is to be washed or rinsed off. Sweat scrapers help remove excess water, or sweat, from the horse, and are available in several designs. Sponges are a versatile product to have in the grooming box, and can be used both to wash the horse and e.g. clean your equipment.

Sponges and sweat scrapers make it easier to shower your horse

Sometimes you may need to wash or rinse your horse, e.g. before a competition or if the horse has become very sweaty after a training session. Wash sponges and sweat scrapers make it easier to wash your horse. A sponge helps e.g. to lather shampoo into the horse's fur, and with a sweat scraper you can scrape off excess water from the horse, so that it dries faster. How to shower your horse:

• First rinse the horse so that the coat gets wet.
• Mix shampoo and water in a bucket. Then dip a sponge in the mixture and rub the shampoo into the horse's fur. Start from the top and work your way down. Avoid the horse's head so that you don't risk getting shampoo in the horse's eyes.
• You clean the tail by dipping it in a bucket of water and shampoo and rubbing away the dirt.
• Remove the shampoo foam with the sweat scraper. During fur shedding season, you can use a sweat scraper with teeth to also remove loose fur.
• Rinse the horse thoroughly, and preferably with lukewarm water. Make sure there are no shampoo residues left in the coat - it can irritate the skin and cause itching.
• Wash the horse's head with only a sponge and water. A soft towel can be great for washing sensitive areas such as around the muzzle and eyes.
• Remove excess water with the sweat scraper, this means that the horse dries much faster. Squeeze water out of tail and man.
• Feel free to use a sweat rug so that the horse dries faster and does not get chilled.

Remember that you wash away fats and oils from the coat if you use shampoo. The oils in the coat help the horse to keep warm, and during colder seasons the horse may need a slightly thicker blanket in the first days after showering. The oils are also what makes the horse's fur shine, and the fur therefore looks the best one to two days after washing!
