Clicker training and calling with a whistle

Clicker training is a fun and effective form of training that uses positive reinforcement. When the dog performs a desired behavior or trick, the trainer clicks on the clicker and immediately rewards the dog with a dog treat or other reward. The sound that the clicker emits is conditioned by a reward so that the desired behavior can be enhanced. The principle is simple - but it is not easy to learn to click and reward at exactly the right time. One needs to be quick, patient and attentive to his dog. The clicker itself is often in plastic with a metal flap that makes the characteristic sound. Some have a ring so they can be attached to a key chain, belt loop or to a string that you can have around your wrist. Other clickers have quick buckles, plastic loops or a hole where string can be threaded through.

If you have a herding dog that you herd with, a whistle can be a good training tool. Some use voice or whistles when herding, but sometimes the voice is not enough - maybe you're hoarse, have a cold or it is windy outside. Then a whistle can be good to have, so that the dog can be called in or signaled. Whistles may also be very useful in call training / come-when-called training.
