Stable Rug for Horses – Choose the Right One for the Stable and the Season

A stable rug is designed for indoor use – in the stable, on the horse's bed and during transport. Unlike turnout rugs, stable rugs do not need to be waterproof, but they should be breathable, gentle on the coat and provide the right amount of warmth for indoor temperatures.

Stable rug versus liner – what is the difference?

A stable rug is a standalone rug designed for use in the stable. A liner is a thinner under-rug used in combination with an outer rug – either a stable rug indoors or a turnout rug outdoors. Liners make it possible to adjust the insulation level without replacing the entire rug, which is both economical and practical.

Choosing the right fill weight

Lightweight (100–200 g): for horses in a heated stable or horses with a thick winter coat.
Medium (250–300 g): for horses in a normally tempered stable, clipped horses.
Heavy (350–450 g): for sensitive, older or clipped horses, or very cold stables.
Liner (50–200 g): worn under an outer rug for extra warmth, does not replace a full rug.

Material and breathability

Stable rugs should breathe well to prevent moisture build-up under the rug. Choose rugs with a polyester or cotton lining that is soft against the skin. Check that the rug sits correctly without rubbing at the shoulder, withers or chest.

How do I choose the right thickness for a stable rug?

It depends on the stable temperature, whether the horse is clipped and how well the horse regulates its heat. A clipped horse in an unheated stable needs more fill than an unclipped horse in a heated stable. Ask your yard manager or vet if you are unsure.

Can I use a turnout rug as a stable rug?

Technically possible, but turnout rugs are made of heavier outer fabrics that do not breathe as well as stable rugs. They can become warm and cause sweating indoors. A dedicated stable rug is preferable for best comfort.

What is a liner?

A liner is a thinner under-rug that attaches under an outer rug via special clips. It increases the warmth level without needing to buy a new rug. Liners are used to easily adjust coverage according to weather.
