Cat Doors

If you have a cat that likes to be both inside and outside, a cat door can give the cat the opportunity to move freely between indoors and outdoors. You don't have to open doors and have cats sitting and waiting outside the door until you have the opportunity to open. With a cat door, the cat can enter even when you are not at home. There are many different variations of cat doors, where some are lockable, some read the cat's microchip, some can read external chips, some have soft flaps and others are extra large for large cat breeds.

That the cat can get in and out on its own can simplify everyday life for both you and the cat. You don't have to run back and forth to the door to open, you don't have to listen to meowing outside the door or the window and the cat doesn't have to wait to get in or go out. The cat door can, depending on the model, be mounted in the front door or the balcony door so that the cat gets its very own entrance. Some cat doors can be locked to one or both sides, so you can have some control over where the cat is. You may want to lock the inside so that a cat that is outdoors can enter, but not go out again - this can be practical when you have a veterinary visit to go to and cannot wait for the cat to come in. Then you can lock the door the night before so that the cat stays indoors after it has been out.

Some cat doors can read the cat's microchip in the neck, and only open for registered cats. This means that the neighbor cat and other cats cannot enter through the door. Different models of these cat doors can register different numbers of cats, so you can find one that suits your needs no matter how many cats you have. Then there are cat doors that read an external chip that you attach to the cat's collar instead. In this way you can also control which cats you let into your house.
