Why does my dog eat grass?

Do you have a dog that eats grass and you don't know why?

It's often more common than you think dogs eat grass, but you haven't figured out exactly why dogs choose to do it. There can be several different reasons why a dog eats grass and they often do it in different ways.

Some dog owners have a dog that eats grass a little now and then, but that is not affected by anything. Maybe these dogs just appreciate the taste or texture of green grass? Since then, there are veterinarians who suggest that grazing dogs have a diet with deficiencies that makes them compensate with eating grass. While others suggest that the dog eat grass because the diet is well balanced. Important to keep in mind is that the dog does not get grass that may have been sprayed with pesticides or any other agent that could be harmful to your dog.

Then there are the dogs that eat grass to just facilitate or induce vomiting. It is usually said that dogs that feel unwell often swallow long grasses without chewing for it to tickle the throat and thus induce vomiting reflex. It doesn't have to be anything dangerous if this happens

As you hear, there are very different opinions about what this grass eating means. With all grass eating it is important that you are responsive to how your dog behaves and how it is doing. Conscious and instinctive eating should not be encouraged. If your dog appreciates a little green grass every now and then and feels good - then in all likelihood there is no danger!
