Just as when we humans get sick or have diarrhea and lose large amounts of water, so does the cat if it gets sick. Cats usually need to absorb 0.5 dl of fluid per kilo each day - and that's when it's healthy. If the cat has fluid loss, it sometimes needs to absorb up to twice as much fluid to restore fluid balance. Therefore, it may be good to give your cat fluid replacement to help the cat restore fluid balance.
You can both make your own fluid replacement consisting of:
- 1 liter of water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon of honey or grape sugar
Or there is a ready-to-use fluid replacement that can easily be mixed with water. The advantage of this type of liquid replacement is that it contains important substances such as: glucose, maltodextrin, potassium chloride, calcium citrate, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate. These are all substances that help to compensate for the loss of fluid and electrolyte that can occur in illness such as diarrhea or vomiting.
