Protect the dog from the heat

After a long and cold winter it is always just as wonderful when the summer heat comes back. Since he spent a lot of time indoors during the winter, there are now long summer days where the majority of the day's waking hours are spent outdoors. But how well does the dog really cope with heat and is there anything that you as a dog owner can do to make it easier for the dog?

How is my dog affected by the heat?
Dogs can usually withstand heat different well. Even though you have a dog with a lot of fur, it can withstand the heat better than a short-haired dog does. If your dog is heat sensitive then it often becomes very powerless during hot days and sleep most of the day. It may sound alarming but is not dangerous as long as the dog gets food and water. Unlike us humans, dogs are not sweating, but instead they are panting while looking for a cool place to sleep. This is when they release heat through paws and abdomen / stomach and therefore appreciate stretching on a cool floor.

If the dog becomes overheated, it can be affected by heat stroke. This is something you notice through any of the following symptoms: the dog breathes violently, red or dark mucous membranes in the mouth or eyes, bloody stools, vomiting, cramps, fatigue, etc.

In order to avoid the dog suffering from heat stroke it is important to keep track of the following:

♥ Always have access to fresh water
♥ Walk in the morning or evening when the temperature is lower
♥ If you are outdoors - make sure the dog has access to water and shade
♥ Make sure there is a cool and ventilated place indoors

In addition to the items listed above, there are also some cooling products that may help your dog in the heat.

Below we have listed some of our summer favorites:
