Is it important for the horse's stomach to get used to grass?

Spring sun rays are slowly warming our planet and faster than we think, summer will be here. As a horse owner, summer is often associated with summer work - but how do you prepare your horse for the summer's green grass and do you have to?

Just as when you change hay or hay silage and you slowly select the horse in the new feed, it is important to choose the horse's stomach when eating grass. At the beginning of the horse's grazing period, the grass is very juicy and brittle which the horses love - but unfortunately it is very fiber-poor. The difficulty with this is that the horse has a stomach that is built to break down fibers. If your horse gets too little fiber or if it has not gotten used to the grass, it can in the worst case cause the horse's large intestine to balance out, which takes a long time to recover from. It can also go so far that the horse gets colic or trapped which can be fatal.

It is therefore extremely important to get used to the horse in the grass in good time before it is time to let go of the pasture. If you have the opportunity to mow fresh grass then a tip is to give the horse grass along with his evening hay! There are also nutritional supplements that promote the horse's gut culture that can be given at the opening so as not to create imbalance.

Before dropping your horse on pasture - make sure:
♥ Turn the horse's stomach into grass - start grazing the horse by hand for 10 minutes and gradually increase the grazing time.
♥ Make sure the horse has access to clean water and salt on the pasture.
♥ That there is a place with shade and shelter from the wind.
♥ Someone looks after the horses daily.
