How do I teach my cat to walk on leash?

A dog in a leash is a sight we are used to seeing - but a cat who is out walking is not as common. It is not necessary for a cat to go for a walk as they do not have to go out to meet their needs. But there are actually those cats who appreciate exploring in the wild!
 

To think about:
First and foremost, it is important to never force your cat to do something the cat does not want. Cats are animals that like to be free and it is therefore strange for them to wear a harness and go on a leash. Therefore, make sure you get a harness that sits comfortably on your cat that it cannot crawl out of. The best thing is if you can choose your cat to wear a harness from when it is small - but it is also good to teach an older cat to have a harness and go on a leash. Take it in small steps and go out first when your cat is comfortable wearing the harness indoors.
 

The first time you are out, it may be good to keep you close to home so that you can take in quickly if the cat is scared or stressed. Make sure you stay in a quiet place - avoid places with children, cars and especially dogs. Let the cat take it at its own pace so that the cat gets a good experience the first time outdoors. The first time you are out maybe the cat feels insecure and stays in the same place, then let the cat take his time and the curiosity will soon take over. Do not pull the leash to try to get your cat running as it may cause discomfort. Before you go out, it can also be good to make sure the cat has an ID tag on the necklace if it is so that it would accidentally get out of its harness and get away.
 

Teach your cat to find it´s way home
One of the reasons why you go out and walk with your cat may be because the cat gets to know the surroundings. This can be because as a family you have moved to a new place and want to learn the cat to find in the new environment. This allows the cat to get to know its new surroundings in peace and quiet and learn how to find it home without having to worry about the cat running away. When the cat feels calm and safe in the new environment, you can let it discover on your own!
