Does my horse need protection from flies and insects?

During spring and summer, flies and insects come to life. Whether these insects do very well for our nature - there are those horses that experience them as extremely annoying. Below we will present some tips and tricks to spare your horse from the stubborn little animals.

Insect repellent spray
There is a plenty of different insect repellent agents in the form of spray, cream and more. These agents have varying degrees of effect depending on how strong they are. There is something called Icaridin - an active ingredient that is the ingredient that has been tested most extensively by all fly and insect repellent agents. It is a common ingredient used for many years in both animals and humans. Aviation agents can be used both for riding or other outdoor activities - but they often need to be re-sprayed every day for optimal protection.

Important to keep in mind if you are a competition rider is the waiting time - some fly means have a waiting time of up to 14 days which means that you must stop using at least 14 days before the competition.

Fly Mask & Fly Fringe
Flies often sit around the horse's eyes which many horses find annoying. Therefore it may then be good to put on the horse a fly hood or a fly fringe to keep the flies away. Fly hoods are often available in several variants where they have different thickness, color and with or without ears. Flying headbands are often attached to the horse's halter - but there are also special variants where a fly hood and fly-fringe are combined.

Anti-fly rugs
Some horses do well with only fly hood and fly fringe - but they are the horses that are extra sensitive to stubborn insects. These horses can get nasty allergic reactions and are therefore in need of more protection such as a rug. These rugs are often in a mesh material that protects the horse while allowing air to circulate so that it does not get too hot during the hot days of summer.

Insect traps
In recent years, several types of insect traps have also appeared on the market. These are traps that are placed in the horses' pasture and should catch insects within a certain radius. This is a fairly new product for so long and therefore quite expensive to buy.
